Herbal Remedies for Headaches
69If you are tired of running to the medicine cabinet each time the throb in your head starts, and would prefer to find some herbal remedies for headaches then this page will go over some of the herbs and natural things that you can do to relieve your aching head (some of them you might even have in your cupboards right now!
Foods that help relieve Headaches
There are actually many foods that can help cure your headache. Probably the most potent of these is almonds. Eating a handful of almonds whenever you start to feel an ache coming on can really help. The reason is that almonds contain a natural painkiller - salicyclates. This is the same ingredient that appears in regular aspirin (albeit in synthetic form). Salicyclates are well known for also reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels as well as added health benefits.
If you don't have any almonds handy, then the next best thing to try are raisins. Many people say that eating raisins regularly has reduced the likelihood of getting headaches all the time. While they won't make your headache go away immediately, they can reduce the times that you get them over the long term.
Herbs for Headaches
There is one herbal remedy that is reknowned for it's ability to reduce headaches and that is Ginger. Ginger works by blocking the release of prostaglandins which are responsible for the inflammation that is often associated with headaches.
Several studies show that patients who are taking ginger in either powdered form, drinking it as a tea, or taking ginger supplements report far fewer headaches and those that they still may have are much less severe.
If your headaches are causing you sleep problems, then taking chamomile is also reported to help migraine sufferers. The flavonoids in chamomile which help fight allergens and viruses (and make you calm and sleepy) also have anti-inflamatory properties that can help with head aches.
More Beneficial Herbal Remedies
There are actually quite a few different herbs that will help with headaches and another very good one is Feverfew. In fact if you go into any health food store that makes its own herbal remedies they are very likely to add feverfew to their headache and migraine blend.
Taking feverfew works by preventing the blood vessels from constricting and also reduces inflammation. Many people say that taken on a daily basis they have fewer migraines and they are less severe. While it usually takes a few weeks to see the full benefits, it's a great natural way to get rid of your headache.

Great advice, Traceye! I'm bookmarking this one. I use chamomile (capsule form) to help me sleep at night and for stomach upsets too. It has an overall calming and relaxing effect; probably why it works so well for headaches.
